Bishop Roland Johnson Sr., 74, passed away unexpectedly, on Monday, November 11, 2019. He was the husband of Melba (Morrison) Johnson.

Bishop Johnson was born on May 27, 1945 in Elizabeth City, NC, a son to the late Linwood W. and Queenie (Cherry) Johnson.

Bishop Johnson was educated in the Elizabeth City Public School System and graduated from P.W. Moore High School. He achieved an Associates degree from Post College in Middlebury, CT., and also served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years receiving an honorable discharge in 1970. Bishop Johnson was employed by Post College as an assistant registrar for several years before becoming employed at Hostess/Wonder Bread as a route salesman. In 1987, he became the Pastor of the Refuge Church of Christ, where he remained Pastor until his passing.

Besides his wife of 52 years, he is survived by one son, Roland Johnson Jr., 3 daughters; Robyn C. Johnson of Meriden, CT, Rhondel Foote and Rochielle Johnson, both of Waterbury, 2 brothers; Alexander Johnson of Baltimore, MD, and Anthony Johnson of Elizabeth City, NC, 5 sisters; Rosa Johnson, Evelyn Johnson, and Barbara Clemons, all of Elizabeth City, NC, Ruth Johnson of Hampton, VA, and Deborah Hooper of Milwaukee, WI. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Johnson.
