Mrs. Gertrude Gibson, 90, of N. Barnes Street, passed away, Friday, February 10, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was the widow of Bristol James Gibson.

Mrs. Gibson was born April 23, 1926 in Lake Providence, LA to the late Alfred and Deborah (Humphrey) Newman.

She was educated in the LA public school system where she graduated from Lake Providence Senior High School and also Shreveport School of Business. Mrs. Gibson relocated to Waterbury in 1942 where she resided until her passing. In her earlier she worked for Walgreen, US Rubber, Uniroyal until becoming a full time homemaker. Mrs. Gibson was a longtime member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church where she was a member of the Willing Workers. She enjoyed painting and ceramics at the Mt. Olive Senior Center. She had a green thumb and had a love for plants. Mrs. Gibson enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She loved taking trips especially with her church family. Mrs. Gibson was the neighborhood mother to many. Her caring giving spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by five daughters; Deborah Gibson, Wanda Gibson, Sinita Gibson all of Waterbury, Bessie Gibson of Manchester, CT, Marlo Gibson of Richmond, VA, one son; Burlin Gibson of Ft. Myers, FL, special children that she raised as her own, Patricia Rogers and Anthony Ward both of Waterbury, ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by all siblings, brothers, Alfred Newman Jr., Leon Newman, Arthur Newman and sisters, Robbie Newman, Bessie Newman Gilreath.
