Mr. Coral Lee Barnes, 69, of Downes Street Waterbury, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Eveylyn (Arroyo) Barnes.

Mr. Barnes was born November 6, 1947 in Waterbury a son of the late Dent L. and Sarah Marie (Harrell) Barnes.

Coral "Carl" as he was known by all was educated in the Waterbury public school system where he was a graduate of Crosby High School class of 1966. While in school, he was a participant of the ROTC program before attending Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA. After returning home, Carl served in the Army Reserve for many years. He worked at various companies in the Waterbury area before becoming employed by the Waterbury Housing Authority Police Department as one of the first few African Americans on the force. In 1982 he joined the Waterbury Fire Department where he served on the force for over thirty years until his retirement in 2012 where he received numerous awards and recognition. Coral was a longtime member of the Greater Waterbury YMCA, a former member of Kellogg Lodge #5, Masonic Lodge, a recruiter for the Waterbury Fire Department and Union Representative. Most recently post retirement he worked as security at Target in Waterbury. Coral was a longtime member of Zion Baptist Church where he was a member of the Tribe of Joseph. He was known throughout the community and a mentor to many. He would share knowledge to anyone who would listen. Coral was also played basketball for the Pearl Street Community Center a sport he loved along with football. He enjoyed working out and was an avid runner. He has received numerous awards throughout the community and was loved by all who knew him.

Besides his wife Evelyn, he leaves one daughter, Rochelle "Missey" Barnes, one stepson; Confesor " Chicky" Rossy, one grandson; Ja'avon G. Barnes Sr., five great grandchildren; one brother; Harold (Verlen) Barnes, twin sister; Carolyn (Barnes) Washington all of Waterbury, a host of nieces of nephews cousins, extended family and friends.
