Mrs. Claudia Jean (Powell) Askew-Stevens, 68, of Enoch Street, entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 24, 2017 after a brief illness at Waterbury Hospital. She was the wife of Michael Stevens of Pine Bluff, AK.

Claudia was born December 13, 1948 in Waterbury, CT a daughter to the late Solomon and Geraldine (Moore) Powell. She was born the third child of eight children, six girls and two boys.

Claudia attended Waterbury Public Schools and later continued her education and earned her nursing degree in the early 90's where she was the president of her graduating nursing class. Claudia loved taking care of and helping others. In the 1980's she worked as a Crisis Interventionist for a Battered Woman's Shelter in Massachusetts. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 20 years, a job she enjoyed wholeheartedly. Claudia had a gift for creating gift baskets for all occasions; a hobby she continued until her sudden illness. She was also a Mary Kay sales representative for many years. Additionally, she was a volunteer with Acts 4 Ministers. Claudia was a longtime member of Refuge Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith under the leadership of Bishop Roland Johnson where she served as a Willing Worker, an Assistant Sunday School Teacher of the Youth Conference for the Connecticut Southern Diocese, and a Missionary where she served as the coordinator for the Beacon Brook Convalescent Outreach Program. Claudia has been described as a Loving Giant, as she was well known in the community for generous, caring and selfless nature. She knew no strangers and was loved by everyone. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

She will be greatly missed and leaves to cherish her many memories, her four children; Gordon Powell of Meriden, CT; William Askew of Waterbury and Shauna Figueroa of Wolcott, CT., fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, siblings; Doris (John) Jackson of Jacksonville, NC; Solomon (Carol) Powell Jr. of Cooperas Cove, TX; Gail Watson, of Waterbury; Abdul Malik (Kim Pope) Shabazz, of Waterbury; Deborah Coleman, of Waterbury and Lori (Tony) Powell-Ellis of Bristol, CT, one uncle; Joe Moore of Harrisburg, VA, several nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving daughter Kelly Powell and her sister Sophia (Powell) Morris.
