Mr. James T. Ward, Jr. 72, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Waterbury, peacefully departed this life on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC after battling a brief illness.

Mr. Ward was born July 22, 1943 in Waterbury a son of the late James T. Ward Sr. and Mable (Butler) Ward-Simmons.

James grew up on Vine Street and Albert Place in Waterbury and graduated from Walsh Elementary School and Crosby High School. He served three years in the US Army working in the medical field and was honorably discharged in 1969. Mr. Ward had been employed in his earlier years at Scovills' Manufacturing in Waterbury and New Departure in Bristol, CT until the company relocated to Sandusky, OH. James relocated and worked for the company in Ohio until his retirement. After retiring, Mr. Ward relocated to Columbia, SC where he worked part-time as a security guard for Richland Two School System and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church until the time of his death. While living in Waterbury, James was baptized in June of 1969 and became a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church until he relocated. He was an avid sports fan who loved the NY Knicks. In his early years he played both basketball and softball and was also an excellent pool player. He was a founding member of the N.S.U., North Square University basketball team and also participated in the bowling league on Friday nights. Mr. Ward was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

James leaves to cherish his memory, eight children; Shauna (Nic) Seresig of Brooklyn, NY, Dana Weaver of Columbia, SC, James T. Ward III of Waterbury, Rev. Sharla Weaver of Hartford, CT, Jodie (Ayanna) Brown of Coronado, CA, Jason Brown of Charlotte, NC, Lee Torres of Waterbury and Jami Ward of Bridgeport, CT, sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two brothers; Auguster Ward, Rev. Larry (Winifred) Ward of Waterbury, one step brother; Jerry (Sandra Jean) Simmons of Saluda, SC, one sister; Delores (Madison) Williams of Saluda, SC one step sister; Mary (Rudolph) Suber of Saluda, SC, three aunts, Ann Butler, Olamae Butler, and Alberta Gallman, several nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
